SIXTY HABITS
FOR A LONGER AND BETTER LIFE
Here are some habits that should be cultivated and become an automatic part of how we live, that may save us from having accidents or unhappy encounters with those who would do us harm.
- 1. Drive safely and don't take chances. Drive defensively.
- 2. Don't go to places that have a higher likelyhood of becoming crime scenes.
- 3. When waiting for someone in your car, unbuckle your seat belt.
- 4. Know your neighbors.
- 5. Keep your car in good running condition, and when the tank is half gone fill it up. Carry a list of auto repair people and towing, etc.
- 6. Keep a couple of cans of gas at home for emergencies.
- 7. Keep emergency medical kits at home and in your cars.
- 8. Don't use power saws. If you do, be extremely alert and careful.
- 9. Park "tail in" when possible.
- 10. Don't tail gate the car in front of you.
- 11. Avoid road rage in yourself, and avoid confronting others who are driving while angry.
- 12. Take your time driving. Don't be in a rush. Don't take chances with red lights or oncoming traffic.
- 13. While driving, ALWAYS look all around. Don't take for granted that you know what's happening behind you.
- 14. Keep your car doors locked all the time, and windows down never over an inch.
- 15. Check your spare tire when you check your oil and water.
- 16. Carry safety reflector triangles in case you need to change a flat beside the road.
- 17. Carry a cell phone at all times.
- 18. Have a phone in every room in your house.
- 19. Keep your dominant gun hand empty. When carrying bags at the shopping center, use a cart instead of carrying bags in your arms.
- 20. Always be in an alert condition wherever you are, and whatever you are doing. Don't daydream or zone out.
- 21. Keep your doors locked while at home, storm doors, too.
- 22. Have peep holes in your doors, and never open your doors to a stranger.
- 23. Carry a gun at home, and have it with you when answering a knock on your door.
- 24. Have a home invasion plan.
- 25. Keep your bedroom doors locked, and your bathroom doors. Have your gun handy when taking a shower. Don't take long showers. Get in and get out.
- 26. Practice drawing your gun every day.
- 27. Don't be careless about gun safety. Review the rules weekly.
- 28. If you are at the range, be doubly careful and aware of what other shooters are doing. If your range is full of careless people, leave immediately.
- 29. When at the range, keep a gun concealed on your person, in case someone tries to steal your weapons from you.
- 30. Never drink enough alcohol to be impaired at all.
- 31. Clean and lube your ccw gun weekly, and load and unload the magazine.
- 32. Keep a few extra weapons scattered around your house, hidden and safe from kids and others, but available quickly in case of trouble.
- 33. Profile people wherever you are, in your mind, and always have a plan for defense.
- 34. Stay off of ladders.
- 35. Be alert about walking, stepping over curbs and potholes, steps, etc. Don't daydream.
- 36. When in a restaurant, or public gathering, sit in a corner with your back to the wall. Be alert about surroundings.
- 37. Always carry your ccw gun everywhere there is no metal detector to give you away.
- 38. Don't use atm machines.
- 39. When shopping, park out in the empty spaces, and keep your eyes open.
- 40. Don't allow yourself to get fat, to over eat, or to get physically weak. Stay in shape.
- 41. Don't go to convenience stores, especially at night.
- 42. Be alert while pumping gas.
- 43. Wear sunglasses while driving or while out in the sun.
- 44. Think about safety while fishing or boating or hunting. Don't horse around.
- 45. Always carry a pocket knife.
- 46. Don't take a dangerous job unless it is a job that repays you very well "spiritually."
- 47. Don't hang out with people who are careless or who attract trouble.
- 48. Wear shoes that grip well and protect your feet.
- 49. Carry a list of important names, addresses and phone numbers with you at all times. Including a lawyer who specializes in self-defense cases.
- 50. Look in the back of your car before getting in.
- 51. Don't play your car radio too loud. Keep your ears open.
- 52. Always wear hearing and eye protection when using firearms.
- 53. Avoid using public restrooms. If you must, go in a stall, don't use a urinal.
- 54. Always have $20 with you. Never keep all your money in one place.
- 55. Xerox all your credit cards, licenses, etc, and keep the copy at home where you can find it in case your wallet is lost or stolen. Keep phone numbers for canceling your credit cards.
- 56. Carry a strong steel ballpoint pen in your shirt pocket.
- 57. Brush your teeth after breakfast and before you go to bed at night.
- 58. Speak a cheerful and complimenting word to your spouse and kids every day.
- 59. Read a Bible verse and pray to start your day.
- 60. Be in the habit of attending a good church and spending time with good people.
